Stamford Visitors Guide

Stamford has events all year round including festivals, open air concerts at stately homes, and music in quiet places- a series of concerts in rural venues. Stamford Shakespeare Company performs from June to August at Tolethorpe Hall, near Stamford.

Stamford, one of England's oldest coaching towns, full of character and bustle that makes it one of the most visited towns in the area. There are over 500 listed buildings within its medieval walls. Now bypassed by the busy A1, the town is a peaceful haven, except for the visitors. In the 13th and 14th century the town was so important it had it's own university, and it's fine church buildings remain. Visit All Saint's Place with its outstanding buildings. Browne's Hospital, medieval almshouses, with a Jacobean hall and chapel. Down by the river are the Burghley Almshouses, whilst St George's Square is worth a look at with the famous George Hotel, an old coaching inn from the 14th century.

Burghley House, just down the road, you can walk it, a William Cecil mansion, state rooms, frescoes, gardens and grounds, famous for hosting the Burghley Horse Trials, sculpture gardens,the new garden of surprises. shop, etc, Tel: 01780 752451 Open: Daily (except Fridays) from 31st March to 28th October 2007 from 11:00-17:00 (last entry 16:30).

Fine traditional butchers and bakers, a street market held on Fridays and Saturdays and once a fortnight there is a farmers market. The Arts Centre with its cellar bar has a full film calendar and theatre events throughout the year. Many places of interest to visit such as Stamford Museum, the Steam Brewery and Browne’s Hospital. Cosy pubs serving locally brewed ale and a fine selection of restaurants to dine.
